SUBPAR MARIO 64, commonly referred to as just "SUBPAR", is a Super Mario 64 Machinima thriller comedy series created by veryFair and airing on Team Toad. The first episode, Day of the Lease, sits at a little over 4,000 views on YouTube as of August 2023.

Synopsis[]

The beginning of a new era for a duo living in Flora County, a segment of the grand Mushroom Kingdom, goes awry as mischief with their landlord, friends, fridges, and unnatural forces taints their everyday life.

Welcome to SUBPAR MARIO 64, a Super Mario 64 Machinima series taking heavy inspiration from the likes of MJacobBarker, MATTHEWGU4, and many other creators! Not only that, it is also based upon the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi series of games, featuring characters, plot-lines, and dialogue you wouldn't find in a typical Mario game...or Machinima series, in this case.

Plot[]

Prologue: Day of the Lease[]

“It has been years since the events of Super Mario World. Bowser has disappeared from the public eye, and the Mushroom Kingdom is at peace.”

This chapter begins with a shot of Princess Peach’s Castle late at night on the date of July 19th, XX10. Inside, a meeting is being held between Princess Peach, a Secretary, and new hire Blue Toad. The three of them discuss the whereabouts of Bowser in the years since Super Mario World, but the Secretary and Blue are dismissive of the importance of it all, considering they’ve gone as long as they have without a problem. Peach begins to seem to agree before suddenly deciding they should throw a kingdom-wide party on the Castle Grounds, something the Secretary and Blue immediately question.  Peach is adamant that a gathering of the Mushroom Kingdom citizens is the best way to celebrate the peace they earned when it seemed hope was lost, despite, as Blue points out, Mario always being on the way to help. Peach isn’t hearing it, however, and tells Blue to instruct Yellow Toad and Toadette that they have to start production of invitations as soon as possible. When Blue steps outside of the meeting room, Yellow and Toadette are quick to ask what’s new. Peach immediately steps out and instructs the group of Toads about where they are to send invitations to, an order which Yellow and Toadette blindly follow despite not knowing what she’s even talking about. Peach sends Blue and Tot to Flora County before walking away. Blue then explains to Yellow and Toadette their new directive, to which the two react confusedly, as a kingdom wide party held on the Castle Grounds is a ridiculous idea. Yellow mentions that it’s especially bad because one Clary T. recently reported that Bowser’s return is imminent. Blue hammers this point home even harder after revealing she wants to hold the gathering two years from then for unknown reasons. He recognizes Yellow and Toadette’s confusion and claims that the Princess has lost it. Cue intro.

After the intro plays, a narrator begins telling his story on an orange background. They proclaim that those listening should “Prepare for something amazingly not amazing.” before cutting to a shot inside Peach’s Castle at night time. Panning shots show Tot asleep in his usual spot and the clock operating as it typically does, only for the last shot to show a Whittle drop into the foyer from the ceiling. This Whittle then proclaims that the coast looks clear and that his comrades from above can head down, only for the narrator to cut the video short after realizing they jumped too far ahead in the story.

The narrator then rewinds to July 24th, XX10, the so-called “Day of the Lease”. The “Day of the Lease” is used as one of several relative points for the rest of SUBPAR, as events are occasionally described as taking place some time after it. An establishing shot shows a lone house in a small green field before a location card reveals it is “The House”, located in Flora County. Inside, a pinkish-purple clad Human is shown to be surveying the living room. Outside, a cyan-clad Human and purple-clad Shy Guy joke about how long the individual inside has been taking. He then goes on to survey the bedroom, only to notice a painting of himself and another Human hanging on the bedroom wall, donning blue clothes and black shoes. That blue-clad Human then approaches The House from outside, assuming he’s arrived at the correct destination. It’s here that a loud slam is heard from the front door, scaring the cyan-clad Human, only for the person inside to kick the front door off its hinges. The narrator is quick to realize that he is, once again, too far into the story, and thus rewinds to when the blue recolor arrives on the scene. The door slams once again, but the second slam only damages the door as the recolor inside yells out in pain. He then casually opens the door and tells the two individuals outside that he’ll take the house. It’s here that the narrator reveals the pinkish-purple recolor to be named Puddin, the blue recolor to be named Swan, the cyan recolor to be named Boli, and the purple Shy Guy to be named Pete. A small montage shows the differences in priority between Puddin and Swan, with Puddin genuinely curious about the weird painting in their bedroom, while Swan is just angry that The House has no fridge. The narrator goes on to explain that Pete winds up befriending Puddin and Swan, even going as far as to spend the night. He also shares that Boli is the landlord of Flora County and not much else.

Later that evening, Blue Toad arrives at The House with Tot nearby. He has a hard time prepping himself to give the invitation to those inside The House, giving himself a short pep talk in his head before beginning to knock on the door very excessively. Puddin, inside, decides that they oughta check who’s at the front door, only for Blue to kick the front door off its hinges, past Puddin, Swan, and Pete, and straight into the fireplace in the living room. Blue begins his presentation very excitedly, but in his head he is clearly concerned about how easily he kicked the door off. Blue remarks that the inhabitants should keep track of everything in their house considering how easily the door’s hinges broke, but Pete counters that the duo only just recently moved into The House. Blue then gives them the invite to Peach’s Gathering before walking out very unceremoniously.

Outside, Blue approaches Tot saying that it’s time for them to leave, but Tot is still completely asleep (as usual). Blue chalks it up to just being “one of those days” before being approached by a Whittle, the same Whittle from the start of the episode before the narrator realized he made a mistake. The Whittle tells him if he’s wrapped up his business at The House, as he’s not supposed to let people stay on the property. The narrator reveals this Whittle to be Dymwhitt, or Dym for short. Dym’s job is to stand in the forest outside The House, known as the Mellowood, to make sure trespassers don’t go to The House. Inside The House, Swan finally gets around to reading the letter given to them by Blue. He realizes it’s an invitation to a party at Peach’s Castle, something Puddin is suspicious of. Puddin quickly decides to head outside and ask Blue what the deal is, only to slip on the doorknob left at his feet after it burned in the fireplace. Outside, Blue attempts to distract Dym with random excuses, claiming it’s really hot out and that he’s thirsty, something Dym is very clearly not fooled by, but Blue runs past him regardless, abandoning Tot in the process. Puddin then approaches Dym, asking if he saw a blue Toad outside, but Dym has no new info for him. Puddin walks back into The House and Swan tells him that it’s more than likely legitimate. He then states that Pete had the idea of going out to check out the rest of Flora and that Puddin should eat and get ready to go.

Even later that evening, the duo are ready to go explore Flora for the first time with Pete by their side. Puddin asks if either of them had seen their house keys, but quickly realizes it doesn’t matter because their front door got blown off anyways. The trio then prepare to head out, but Puddin stops just as they begin to walk away, taking a moment to gaze upon the start of his new life: The House, just for Swan and himself. Swan then throws a rock at the back of Puddin’s head to stop him from being distracted.

The narrator closes out the chapter saying Puddin and Swan would go on to lead great lives and live happily ever after…sorta. A scene shortly after shows Blue arriving at Peach’s Castle after a long day and miraculously finding Tot sleeping in his usual position despite being abandoned in Flora. Cut to credits.

Interlude: "...where were we?"[]

This short begins with panning shots of an unknown room in darkness. The room contains a glass ceiling with a view straight into outer space, a handful of couches, and bookshelves with items scattered about. A Whittle with a red and slightly blue leaf and red scarf walks into the room, taking a glance at their surroundings, only to proclaim that they know somebody is present. The room is lit up, and a blue Biddybud reveals itself to the Whittle in a flash of white light. The Whittle continues, knowing there are more individuals hiding in the room. A Raven and a Koopa Troopa reveal themselves in the same manner as the Biddybud did as the Whittle ponders what the three of them are doing in the room. The trio have no verbal response, but instead turn to look at a blue book resting on a small table in the center of the room. The Raven then claims that the trio couldn’t wait to finish hearing a story. The Whittle claims that they are a tad busy, but the trio pleads with them to continue telling the story, revealing the Whittle to be one Beckett. After the trio seats themselves, Beckett gives in to their desires and slowly walks up to the book on the table, glancing upon it for a short while. He then turns around as the orange narrator background from Day of the Lease takes over the screen, with white text reading “Okay, err…where were we?” appearing. The narrator’s text then transitions to the same color text as Beckett’s, revealing Beckett to be the narrator from Day of the Lease.

Chapter 1: "The New Place"[]

It’s been several hours since the Day of the Lease. Citizens of Flora County are shocked to discover that somebody has finally moved into The House.

This chapter begins with a date card revealing the date as July 25th, XX10: “The Morning AFTER the Day of the Lease”. Several panning shots inside The House show Puddin and Pete asleep in the living room, with Swan taking up the bed all for himself. Pete is woken up by the sounds of Whittles talking outside. As he peers out the window, he can make out that one of the voices is Dym, shortly before Dym is trampled by four individuals: a golden brown Whittle, a Shy Guy astronaut, a red Shy Guy, and a red Toad. These four individuals quickly rush towards The House, only to be stopped by Pete at the door. Pete calls out the Whittle’s name in fake excitement: “Lasdan!”, he says. He tries his best to coerce the four individuals into going literally anywhere but The House, but Lasdan isn’t buying any bit of it since he knows Boli isn’t too fond of trespassers on The House’s grounds. Lasdan lunges at Pete which causes him to flinch, leading Lasdan to claim that he “won the interaction” before shoving Pete out of the way to get into The House. All the commotion causes Puddin to wake up and ask Pete what’s going on, only to turn around and see four unknown individuals in his new house. Cue intro.

Lasdan claims that it’s time everybody begins some introductions, which confuses Puddin and only further tires Pete. Lasdan reveals his full name to be Lasdanottel, but he goes by both Lasdan and Las. Every Whittle in SUBPAR has a name containing double T’s. Dymwhitt and Lasdanottel are the main examples of this, despite both of them going by shorter names (Dym and Lasdan/Las respectively). Beckett is also an example of this tidbit. Lasdan then begins his introductions for everybody else, claiming there’s “like, twelve other people to meet!”, which Puddin is quietly dismissive of. Lasdan then slides across the room and besides Pete to introduce him, resulting in Pete getting jumpscared. He introduces Pete as a landlord in training, referencing the fact that he is Boli’s assistant, but also as Puddin’s new best friend. Pete pushes him away, claiming that he’s too late on that introduction. Lasdan then drops next to the Shy Guy astronaut. He claims he is the captain of the “S.S. Crescent Waxer” before revealing his name to be Captain Mac. Puddin confusedly asks if the S.S. Crescent Waxer is a boat, only to be immediately shut down by Lasdan who excitedly explains that it’s a spaceship. Mac claims it has seen every part of the galaxy, and then asks Lasdan for permission to stop shouting his introduction. Lasdan then moves on to the red Toad, Two-Tone, who he calls an anomaly of Flora County. Two-Tone asks if Puddin has a refrigerator as he is, quote, “in dire need of refrigeration”, which prompts Puddin to remember that they don’t have a fridge only to realize just how ridiculous Two-Tone’s request was. Lasdan then introduces the red Shy Guy, Spot, who is the first to greet Puddin relatively formally. Puddin responds with the same formality, but Spot quickly undercuts the moment when he shares that he is banned in several Kingdoms and provinces of the Mushroom Kingdom.

Puddin’s fear of Spot’s statement is interrupted by 1. Lasdan’s excitement about such a terrifying tidbit and 2. Swan pounding on the bedroom door to ask what the commotion is, which prompts Lasdan to ask if somebody else is home. After Puddin shares who Dr. Swan is, Lasdan is very fast to interrupt him with the first of a handful of housewarming gifts. Lasdan’s gift is a small penguin doll which Puddin takes a second to take in before thanking him for the gift. It’s here that Lasdan finally takes the moment to learn Puddin’s name before taking the doll to their bedroom to meet Swan. Spot then leaps in front of Puddin to give his housewarming gift: a simple easel with no painting propped up on it, claiming that Puddin can liven up his new place with it. Puddin is still clearly afraid to communicate with him, but Spot pushes the easel aside, welcoming Puddin to Flora. Two-Tone approaches, immediately proclaiming that he brought Puddin a fridge, to which Puddin reacts with excitement. He then immediately clarifies that he is totally lying before stating that, quote, “My presence is a present.”, only to walk out of The House. Puddin is baffled, but Pete notices that Two-Tone immediately turned around. When he walks back inside, he says that his sense of irony also happens to be a present. Two-Tone’s intelligence is extremely questionable. He clearly has a pretty solid vocabulary and way with words, but he is so bafflingly unpredictable that the way he speaks almost doesn’t matter whatsoever, hence the name Two-Tone. The last to approach with a gift is Captain Mac. In a wild display, Mac shouts “KERPOOYAH!” before summoning a small model of a hatship from seemingly thin air. Puddin and Pete are shown to be completely befuddled, but Mac claims he’s just performing “sleight of stub” magic that he learned from the Bonneter he purchased the Crescent Waxer from. He then clarifies that he doesn’t really understand gift giving and that a small model of the Crescent Waxer was the best gift he could think of, but Puddin is grateful regardless.

Festivities are interrupted soon after, however, as a voice from behind Pete begins sarcastically remarking about what’s going on in The House. It is revealed to be Dym, having left his post in the Mellowood to check up on everybody inside The House. However, this time something is different. Dym claims that he’s not here to kick anybody out like he usually does, but he would prefer to actually make some conversation for once. He’s clearly not very good at it, however, as he just begins being snarky about a bunch of details within The House, such as the walls and the carpet. Things get particularly tense when Lasdan walks back into the living room with Swan by his side, who is very excited to see Dym actually show up. Dym clearly doesn’t feel the same whatsoever, as he is still kind of angry about how Lasdan and the gang shoved him aside to get to The House, which puts Lasdan in defense mode as the two continue arguing. Pete tells Puddin that this is normal and that they have a bad history together. When the arguing expands to include Spot and Mac, Pete suggests that everybody sit down to get to know Puddin and Swan better. Lasdan, Mac, Spot, and Two-Tone are quick to agree, but Dym is shown to be attempting to shuffle out of The House quietly. When he is caught, he doesn’t even turn around to tell everybody to their faces that he doesn’t want to, instead opting to lie with his back to the crowd and claim that he has work to do. Pete doesn’t pressure him any further, leading Dym to apologize and walk back outside. Everybody within The House congregates at the table in the living room, but Puddin is still staring out the front door with guilt as Dym walks away. Lasdan then utters the phrase “Same scrap, different day,” before joining the rest of the group.

Meanwhile, northwest of Flora County… New hire Blue Toad decides to visit his coworkers at Peach’s Castle on his first off day.

Meanwhile, at Peach’s Castle, Blue Toad bursts through the front doors and into the foyer with excitement. Nobody is in the room to greet him, which makes him realize that he should stop practicing his intros when nobody is there to reciprocate. He finds Tot in the same spot he found him just the night prior (again, “It’s been several hours since the Day of the Lease.”). Toadette walks into the foyer curious why Blue is in the Castle on a Sunday, a day he’s not supposed to be working, but Blue can’t come up with an excuse. She tells him he’s technically trespassing, only for an excuse to finally come to Blue. He asks if she’d believe him if he said he left something in the Castle the night prior, but she isn’t buying it, causing Blue to immediately concede. He then asks if she’d believe him that he spent the night, which is actually the truth. However, he had to spend the night outside because he has no room inside the Castle itself to sleep in. Toadette asks if he just stayed to check if Tot made it home safe, but Blue claims that he doesn’t care about Tot and that he was worthless in Flora. In reality, Blue did actually come back to check if Tot managed to make it back despite abandoning him in Flora. Blue asks why Toadette is dressed up differently than he usually sees her, and she says that today is new staff orientation for a batch of newbies. This makes Blue confused, as he had only been hired around a week or so ago, but Toadette assures him he isn’t being replaced. As Toadette begins to walk towards Orientation Station 1 (the Whomp’s Fortress painting room), Blue attempts to ask her something, but holds off as he hears the new hires walk through the front door.

Into the Castle walk a Beanish wearing a greenish-blue sweater and a yellow Toad wearing purple pants and a white shirt. The yellow Toad begins to gawk at his surroundings. The Beanish does the same but is cut off by another Toad, this one donning a green Toad cap, green vest, and white shoes. Blue turns around excited to meet the new hires, causing the green Toad to pop up in excitement. The green Toad is excited to finally meet a resident of Peach’s Castle, which Blue corrects him on: he doesn’t exactly live in the Castle yet. The Beanish then asks Blue if he could navigate them to the first Orientation Station, but the green Toad wants to take advantage of the opportunity to talk to a Royal. The green Toad asks about his kart which he thinks has golden rims; Blue clarifies that he has a normal kart with rusted rims. The yellow Toad asks what his salary is; Blue claims he gets paid in exposure. The Beanish asks if he’s ever been in the same room as Mario; Blue says that even the Princess hasn’t seen him in forever. The newbie trio then begin pondering how Mario has shown up in recent movies, such as Super Mario & the Fabled Crystal, with the yellow Toad saying he prefers the film Bowser’s Inside Story. Blue has to be the bearer of bad news and tells the trio that every Mario actor is actually just a lookalike, to which the green Toad responds in denial, saying Fabled Crystal sucks anyway. Fabled Crystal is a made up movie for the continuity, something I plan to have show up consistently to make the world feel lived in. Bowser’s Inside Story is an obvious reference to the DS game. I wanna play with the idea that spin-off games are simply fiction in this continuity, with the Mario & Luigi games being movies and the Paper Mario games being novels.

Suddenly, Yellow Toad (the character Yellow Toad, not the newbie yellow Toad) appears from Orientation Station 1, asking Blue very impolitely to stop distracting the newbies. When Blue tries to tell him he wasn’t distracting them, Yellow cuts him off and asks the newbies to follow him to get their orientation started. This upsets Blue, who stares at Yellow with an upset expression as the trio of newbies walks past him. The yellow Toad stops and turns to look at Blue, which causes Blue to angrily ask “Can I help you?” The yellow Toad takes another second to stare at Blue before rambling to Blue that he sees sadness in him. He claims Blue puts up a barbed front around others despite being “afraid for his life”, which clearly shocks Blue. The yellow Toad then says that it’s nothing to worry about, and that he is always there for him, revealing his name to be Kabosu and mistakenly calling Blue “Buckenberry”. Kabosu then shares that he has a degree in social psychology, to which Blue responds by thanking him despite clearly being shocked by what he just said. Kabosu nods before running off to Orientation Station 1, leaving Blue stone faced.

The front doors of the foyer open once again; this time, a Toad wearing a cap with a spade symbol on it walks through expressing disgust. He is followed by a Toad wearing a similar cap with a heart symbol on it. The heart symbol Toad tells Spade that he needs to calm down, which Spade defends by saying they can’t risk intruders on the Castle Grounds. Heart immediately bounces back, clarifying to Spade that the Castle Grounds are public access. A short flashback from a few minutes ago shows Spade entering the Warp Pipe to Toad Town from the Castle Grounds with a Biddybud in his hands, whom he kicks off into Toad Town. Spade then kind of just drops his argument before just saying that he hates bugs. Blue, who happened to overhear their conversation, asks angrily if Spade kicked one Buddy off the Castle Grounds. Spade asks what his business with Buddy even is, but Blue repeats Heart’s point: the Castle Grounds are public access! Blue manages to push Spade’s buttons pretty hard when he says that he knows that despite only having worked at the Castle for a week. Spade rebuts by approaching Blue and asking him what the protocol is for when the Princess gets kidnapped, leaving Blue flustered. “COME AGAIN?!”, Spade barks, with Blue claiming that’s an unfair question. Spade asks him if they just didn’t teach him that at orientation, but Blue immediately claps back by asking if Peach invited him to a meeting with her during his first week. This is a jab at the fact that Blue technically outranks Spade, as he is a handyman that is significantly closer to Peach than Spade might be. Spade, flabbergasted, turns to look at Heart, who simply calls him an instigator and walks away. Spade turns back around to Blue, saying that they might’ve just started off on the wrong foot even though they only met a short while ago. Spade asks how Blue knew Buddy, with Blue explaining that they spent the night together on the Castle Grounds since Blue couldn’t sleep inside. Spade then asks if he wants to join Buddy in Toad Town. Blue says he’s only here to visit his coworkers, which Spade responds to by calling him an intruder before suddenly lunging at Blue with a left hook, followed by a slide kick, both of which Blue dodges. Blue attempts to ask him what on Earth he’s doing before Spade yells that the inside of the Castle is not public access, unlike the Castle Grounds. Spade manages to land a strong hit on the top of Blue’s cap, knocking him to the floor. Spade continues to lecture Blue, saying that his coworkers are only at the Castle for the Princess and not to see Blue. Blue sassily responds that maybe the Princess oughta buy some spears for the staff, claiming Spade’s punches couldn’t save Peach’s life. This visibly angers Spade, whose face turns red, but the argument between the two is interrupted by Toadsworth walking into the room. Spade essentially tattles on Blue, saying he showed up to work when he wasn’t on the schedule, but Toadsworth clearly sees that some sort of altercation happened between the two. He tells Blue to follow him, as he has some sort of task to give him, but Blue once again tries to say that he’s just here to see his coworkers. Toadsworth gives him a stare far more threatening than any punch from Spade could ever be, scaring Blue into following him. Spade looks on in disgust as Toadsworth closes the door to the downstairs.

Toadsworth asks him if his head is alright, as he kind of understood that Blue got rocked in some manner. Blue says that he’s felt worse, but Toadsworth isn’t buying it. When he asks again if he’s alright, Blue attempts to put on a smile and say that he’s okay. Toadsworth very obviously doesn’t believe Blue, but he asks him to follow him downstairs into the basement as there is something he wants to show him. The two arrive near the Lethal Lava Land painting as Blue begins to ask a ton of questions about the things kept downstairs. Toadsworth tells him most of them are artifacts from Mario’s journeys, such as the many Power-Ups strewn about. As Toadsworth begins working on something behind the scenes, Blue asks what happened to “Terry,” the Princess’s Secretary he was in a meeting with a few nights prior. Toadsworth claims that the Secretary has been sent to work with Mayor Toadlin of Toad Town in order to coordinate its reconstruction, something Blue finds impressive. He then asks if that’s why Peach had Blue join them for their meeting on his very first day, with Toadsworth confirming his suspicion that he is indeed replacing the Secretary along with the three newbies, Kabosu, Oddard and Beanjamin. Toadsworth says that the trio all vouched for one another in their own hiring process, something Blue cannot seem to process as he doesn’t understand how they can recommend one another for the same job they’re applying for at the same time. Toadsworth rebuts that there is no shame in backing up one’s friends, something Blue clearly takes to heart. As Toadsworth continues working on whatever he intends to show Blue, he remarks that it’s pretty difficult to hold a conversation with the old Toad without seeing his face. After an awkward moment of silence, Blue remarks that he can’t imagine the Royals getting much out of having a dungeon, but is interrupted when a Clown Car locked in firing mode peers around the corner Toadsworth had walked behind. His immediate reaction is total shock and fear, causing him to yell incessantly. Toadsworth kicks the Clown Car aside and formally introduces Blue to “Clownie”. Blue is still in shock and asks how on Earth they acquired a Clown Car. Toadsworth explains that Mario stole it from Bowser last time Bowser kidnapped the Princess and they’ve kept it in the basement ever since. After Blue lists off its many weapons, he tells Toadsworth that it is very clearly in firing mode. Toadsworth tells him it’s nothing to worry about, as he begins to explain that he and several other Toads attempted to modify it for their use, only to break it. Even the pigment of its mouth faded from orange to white inexplicably. Toadsworth tells Blue that he understands he was hired for his ingenuity and that he wants Blue to personally tamper with Clownie during his free time. This makes Blue a little angry, as he explains that Toadette, Yellow Toad, and Spade all gave him trouble for being at the Castle and not working, but now Toadsworth is telling him that he should mess with Clownie when he’s not working. When Blue asks if he is only allowed to come in when he is working or wants to work on Clownie, Toadsworth tells him that’s an unfair question. Blue’s only response is that he has no reason to be fair.

This makes something in Toadsworth click, as he begins to explain through a series of flashbacks that the undertone in Peach’s Castle is one of fear. The Toads work all day to ensure things operate in the Castle smoothly, but the possibility of Bowser’s return is extraordinarily volatile. Nobody working for the Princess is nearly as brave as Mario as well, leading every Toad inside to believe the best they can do is provide support elsewhere: cooking, cleaning, general handiwork. Despite this, Mario’s been gone for as long as Bowser has and uncertainty is through the roof. Toadsworth tells Blue that he’s new blood, though; he’s the first Toad hired at Peach’s Castle since Bowser disappeared alongside Mario some time ago. Toadsworth promises to talk to Toadette, Yellow, and Spade about their tone. Oddly enough, Blue says that Toadsworth doesn’t have to bother Toadette. Toadette is the only one of the three “aggressors” to stick around and have a somewhat meaningful conversation with Blue, showing concern for what he did when he got back from Flora the night prior and even saying she’ll talk to him later despite duty calling. Toadsworth insists and goes on to say that Kabosu, Oddard (the green Toad newbie), and Beanjamin (the Beanish newbie) are proof of the faith the Castle has in newbies. Blue truly is the Castle’s best opportunity for change, especially to avoid the environment that seems to be affecting him as much as it does. Blue looks back up at Toadsworth, thanking him. Toadsworth nods, and then asks Blue to consider his offer regarding Clownie, which Blue accepts. The first thing he decides is to attempt a name change. Toadsworth says he’ll check in every so often to see how things are going with Clownie, and then begins to walk away. Blue actually has one more question for him, stopping Toadsworth dead in his tracks: he asks if there’s any chance he could get a room upstairs so he doesn’t have to commute to work or sleep outside. Toadsworth basically tells him he’ll do his best, and Blue smiles genuinely for the first time since the newbie trio walked in.

Blue heads back upstairs to the Castle Foyer and is greeted by a very packed room full of Toads beginning work for the day. Excitedly, he begins to try talking to a bunch of them, starting with one of the chefs. The purple colored chef Toad simply walks past him, however, dodging his conversation starter entirely. Blue goes around trying to engage in conversation with several Toads and others in the foyer, but nobody seems interested. An orange Toad even tells him to get back to work. Slowly but surely, the foyer empties out as the Toads settle into their workstations. By the time it is completely vacant, Blue is left alone. He turns to where Tot usually is sleeping, believing him to be the only accompaniment in the room; even Tot is miraculously gone. Blue wanders towards Orientation Station 1 and sees Toadette and Yellow doing their skit for Kabosu, Oddard, and Beanjamin’s orientation. He watches sadly through the banister before walking away out of the room. Once the skit is over and Yellow Toad takes over explaining, Toadette realizes somebody had walked in, but she didn’t fully process who it was as she was in the middle of her presentation. She walks towards the door of the room and sees it wide open. Blue is still standing in the foyer, but turns to look at the door he left open. Toadette stares down the hallway, only for the door to slam shut, muffling the sounds of the winding clock in the foyer.

The chapter ends with the group in Flora preparing to take a picture. Puddin notices that Dym is watching them from afar, causing the Whittle to walk back to his post, something Puddin once again feels guilty about. Pete starts the countdown on the camera. The camera snaps, and the group has created a new memory together. Simultaneously, at Peach’s Castle, Blue gazes upon the completely empty room he was left in before walking outside for fresh air. As he stands on the bridge thinking about the events that transpired during his morning, his expression changes to one of total sadness. The final shot of the chapter is Blue standing on the bridge just above the Castle’s moat, tears in his eyes. Cut to story credits.

A post credits scene shows Lasdan and his gang following Puddin as he sends them on their way home. Lasdan mentions to Puddin that he would prefer if they kept the Penguin Doll gift between the two of them, but Puddin doesn’t understand why. Lasdan claims that it’s for no particular reason, but Mac butts in and says that Lasdan stole it. Puddin says he can give it back, but Lasdan insists he keep it. Mac clarifies that it is from one Leline, who is actually its original creator. Lasdan tries to imply he’s “borrowing” the Penguin Doll and says that people borrow from friends all the time, but Mac clarifies that Leline hates Las. Las then says coins are just hard to come by, to which Mac and Spot respond by pretending to arrest him, carrying him away from The House. Puddin watches on as the first friends he’s made in his new life walk away after the first day they spent together. Two-Tone runs past Puddin to catch up with the rest as Puddin walks back to The House, revealing that the group bought and installed a new door with a star on it. Cut to production credits.

Cut to End of Chapter card. The iris at the very end is a silhouette of Lasdan’s head.

Trivia[]

  • SUBPAR has been in production since 2015, but the oldest characters were made in 2013.
  • Pete was originally going to be a purple Mario recolor named Professor Pete before the Shy Guy mod was made.
  • Originally, a Toad named Paco was going to be in The New Place, but he has since been replaced by a Beanish character. Paco has not been heard from or seen ever since. Anyone who knew him now denies they ever did.
